Doug Powell
“The Lost Chord”
Sure, Doug Powell wears his pop influences on his sleeve, but what’s crucial is that he weaves them magically into something his own. From the opening track, “Merlin Laughed” to the Fabs-meet-Trick “A Roar Boring Alice” to the lush “Baby Blue” (not the Badfinger tune), Powell’s aim is true. “Queen of Hurts” roars like a buzz-saw, while the record’s centerpiece, the epic “Cul-De-Sac,” sounds like a great, lost Todd track (and, like his hero, Powell plays all the instruments on the record, with the exception of drums on one cut). “The Lost Chord” is an amazingly beautiful record and a testament to Powell’s vast talent. A pop renaissance man for the 2000’s.

The Lost Chord is sumptuous, grandiose and overblown in equal measure. It’s also unquestionably anachronistic. A head-on collision of pomp, AOR and power pop that ambitiously draws on his experience with Todd Rundgren - a man he's clearly indebted to - along with the vocal dexterity and dazzling arrangements of Jellyfish and the exuberant pop thrills of Cheap Trick at their best, this is an unadulterated joy from start to finish. My only criticism would be that at just 41 minutes, it is far too short! There’s so much going on here and it’s performed with such gusto that its brevity is almost cruel. A fantastic pop record!
